Three Army Friends - One Exceptional Mission |
A Unique, Inspiring Story |
Row2Recovery is the brainchild of three former British Army commanders who went through military training together before going on to see extensive combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Ed Janvrin, Alex Mackenzie and Tony Harris witnessed friends and comrades sustain life-changing injuries, while Tony lost his own left leg when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated under his vehicle in May 2009. All three men were profoundly moved by their experiences and feel compelled to help the fallen. From this desire to help, Row2Recovery was born. |

Beyond Injury, Achieving The Extraordinary |
Row2Recovery is about more than just raising money. The campaign intends to change attitudes towards disability by shining a spotlight on the lives of injured British troops as they adjust to new physical and emotional challenges. It also hopes to inspire others faced with life-altering injuries to realise the seemingly impossible is, in fact, possible. To achieve these campaign goals, ex-captains Ed Janvrin and Alex Mackenzie will team up with two injured service personnel and undertake a challenge successfully completed by fewer people than have reached the summit of Everest, or journeyed into space. At the end of 2011, this four-person crew will embark on an epic 3,000 mile voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in a rowing boat. Tony Harris, who continues to serve in the British military, will remain on dry land but spearhead a record-breaking event of his own. In July he will lead a group of injured troops and GB Olympic athletes as they rack up one million miles on a rowing machine over three days at a central London venue. |
| Why This Matters | |||||
Row2Recovery is about breaking down the misconceptions of what life is like for an injured solider and their families, while changing attitudes about what can be achieved by those with disabilities. These unique and exceptional physical rowing challenges will reiterate the message that British forces returning from combat zones need public support, not sympathy. It is also a way to honor the memory of those who did not make it home safely to their loved ones. Row2Recovery launches ahead of the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics in London when the best athletes in the world will converge in the capital to compete for gold, silver and bronze medals. With the eyes of the world focused on Britain, Row2Recovery will be another way of proudly showing off the nation’s athleticism, competitiveness, teamwork and boundless spirit of survival. The money raised by Row2Recovery will be distributed between three key charities working tirelessly to improve the lives of British troops and their families: Help for Heroes, the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) and ABF – The Soldiers’ Charity.
